License to Operate

Is it bad when my computer says that it is beginning a physical dump of memory? or when it asks me if I want to start windows normally? or when it begins a disk check of drive C upon a normal start up? or when it takes 30-45 minutes and 10-15 attempts for it to start up normally? Which of these seems to be the worst new feature of my laptop?

This was bound to happen. Giving me a computer is like giving a ten year old two phone books and the keys to a new car. They should make us take some sort of class before we are allowed to transition from pen and ink to software and hard drives. I suspect that one of the first things that they would tell you in such a class would be not to purchase a Gateway computer. The second might be to get a Mac. The third might be to run anti-virus software. Who knew?

I sure don't. I have yet to mention that my USB ports, speakers and CD rewrite drive have all stopped working. I still have a warranty, but that involves sending Gateway my computer...what a hassle. I'd give my two phone books and keys back if I wasn't so hooked on this blogging thing...and had to get news on the Chi-town Cubbies...write papers...email...

'with great power comes great responsibility'. That's what peter parkers uncle told him in Spider Man an that's what I'm telling you now.

Here is the solution to your problem without spending a penny:

1) backup everything you want
2) get your old installation media which came wtih the laptop and reinstall the entire computer from scratch
3) immediately run 'windows update' and install all security updates and reboot, repeat this process until there are no more updates. Configure windows to automatically download and install updates .
4) install the web brower Firefox and never open internet explorer again
5) install anti-virus software
6) sit back and relax: enjoy a computer which boots in 2-3 minutes instead of 20-30!

I promise it's worth the time investment to do this now since the slow computer is just going to cost you hours and hours in the future. If I lived in MSP I'd do it for you!

Hopefully the cubbies can survive a trip to St. Louis! I'm going to the Red/White Sox game tonight, I think I get to sit with Bronsn Aroyos parents.

Really, the best thing you could do is to use your PC for a bookend or something and buy a nice Mac laptop. Even though they are more expensive they pay for themselves as you would have had to have bought 7 or 8 PCs during the lifetime of that one lovely Mac.

I utterly disagree with grubedoo. The laptop would make a much nicer keychain or coaster...

I don't think you shouldn't buy a mac because you are more interested in reliablity or longevity, those are both (in my opinion) false promises. I use mac, windows and linux almost every day and find them all to be about the same in terms of reliablity/performance.

I wish my hair looked like my icon's hair

Cap'n crunch is clearly and utterly misinformed. Let me explain what he said in a way that will make much more sense to you.

"I drive a Mazerati, a Geo Metro and a Land Rover every day and find them to be about the same in terms of reliability and performance."

:-D
